Food: My $0.02
So far in 2010 the topic of food and nutrition in general is a big one, I have seen some of my old friends on FB even considering vegan-ism. I had one fb ’friend’ even have her status read “I LOVE MCDONALDS!” after I finished vomiting I commented that she should watch Food Inc and maybe she would think twice about ingesting the ammonia laden burgers…nope! I have found some people purposefully avoid the film because they don’t want to know! I find that crazy! Its not just the food itself that is created in such a horrific way its the treatment of animals AND the farmers who make almost nothing to raise them because of the market forces. I don’t want to rant on about every point of contention I have with most of the food industry all I want to do is put up some links for you to follow and read more about. All I really care about when it comes to nutrition is my wife and children..I do try to influence my closest friends about dangers of some of these products but it is akin to walking a tight rope so that I don’t offend them. I will admit it can be difficult at times.
To really make a HUGE impact on yourself and your family try to avoid processed foods of any type, look for whole foods. SUGAR is horrible; sodas should be eliminated 100% and fruit juices should be 100% juice and consumed in a moderate fashion as they too are very high in frustose and can be tough on your body in the short and long term. Buy organic or at least start with all natural products, shop at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. Both companies have solid mission statements and integrity. Take the time to find grass fed beef it is sooooo worth it in so many ways. Hit the farmer’s markets during the spring/summer/fall, plant your own garden and eat what’s in season. You can grow butternut squash and gords that will stay good in your basement to use all winter.
We have a sit down family dinner pretty much 7 days/week and it is great. This is one piece of Americana that has all but disappeared. The prep time and time to talk and socialize HUGE IMHO.
Here are a couple links to check out and explore…I am far far from a conspiracy theorist but the corruption involved with what we call food and feed our children is disgusting.
